Remember when your parents were lecturing you on the rules for taking the car for a spin? Dad would put his face in front of yours and say, “Are you listening?” Of course you would say “sure” even though your mind was miles away on the adventure to come.

Today, as adults the children who received the council and wisdom of their parents are facing a reverse situation in their lives. They are finding themselves concerned about their aging parents and what their needs will be as their health and mental abilities fail them. In some cases the children must take the role as parent in securing the safety and well being of an elderly family member.

Julie lives 600 miles from her mother. Knowing her mothers health is frail and she lives alone, Julie calls her every evening after work. The conversation always goes like this;

“How are you doing today Mom, Julie asks?
“Everything’s fine”, Mother replies.
“Are you taking your pills?”
“Yes, everything’s fine.”
“Do you need anything?”
“Everything’s fine.”

Groundhog Day

groundhog3Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated on February 2nd in the US and Canada. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when the groundhog emerges from its burrow it will leave the burrow signifying that winter will end early. If it is sunny and the groundhog see its shadow it will return to its burrow for six more weeks.

In southeastern Pennsylvania, Groundhog Lodges (Grundsow Lodges) celebrate the holiday with social events where food is served, speeches are made and plays are performed. The Pennsylvania German dialect is the only language spoken at the event, and those who speak English pay a penalty ( nickel, dime or quarter), per word spoken.

The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania with the groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil taking center stage.

Balance Problems

According to the NIH ( National Institute of Health) as people grow older they may have difficulty with their balance. Nearly 8 million American adults report having chronic problems with balance.  An additional 2.4 million Americans report having a chronic problem with dizziness alone.

Having good balance means being able to control and maintain your body’s position, whether you are moving or remaining still. Balance helps you walk without staggering, get up from a chair without falling and climb stairs without tripping. According to CDC&P ( Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) one third of adults 65 and older fall each year.

Some exercises can improve balance. Our Balance Classes with Thomas Attardi may improve your balance.

The “Magic Number Ten

The “Magic” Number Ten

Ten thousand steps a day is approximately equal to thirty minutes of moderate exercise which is one of the easiest and safest activities for calorie burning and improving cardiovascular health. The simple exercise of walking can help take off abdominal fat and decrease the risk of diseases associated with it. A pedometer can help you count the steps you walk each day.  Walking one mile at a good pace can burn approximately 100 calories. Taking 100 calories a day out of your eating habits reduces you by 200 calories a day or 1,400 calories per week. To burn one pound you need 3,300 calories so in approximately 2.5 weeks you will gently and easily loose one pound or 10 pounds in 25 weeks.

Some tips to keep in mind while walking.

  • Wear good walking or athletic shoes
  • Keep your head level and look straight ahead
  • Bend your elbows at about 90 degrees and keep them close to your sides so your arms can swing back and forth
  • Roll your foot
  • Take long smooth strides walking as briskly as you can
  • Take deep, natural breathes. You should be able to have a conversation.
  • Search out fun places to walk. The Walking Group at Aldersly picks different locations each month. Check our calendar for listings.

Right Sizing, Part VI Storage

Storage

  • Outfit any closet with drawers and shelves, eliminating the need for a chest of drawers or armoire.  Covered boxes on shelves can serve as extra draw space.
  • Storage can be incorporated into many pieces of furniture. Use an ottoman that also doubles as a coffee table and storage space. Use trunks as tables. Consider end tables that also have storage space for books. Platform beds offer space for draws on the bottom. Storage boxes that fit under a box spring and frame can be covered by a bed skirt.
